Mohanlal’s Empuraan creates history: First Malayalam cinema to release on IMAX

L2: Empuraan, the second film in the Lucifer trilogy , starring Malayalam superstar Mohanlal in the lead, and featuring an ensemble cast is headed to theatres across the world on March 27, 2025. After some last-minute issues with co-producers Lyca Productions, that threatened to derail the release plans, producer Anthony Perumbavoor of Aashirvad Cinemas, managed to get them out of the picture, bring in a new partner (Gokulam Films) and ensure that nothing stands in the way of Empuraan hitting theatres in less than 10 days.

Prithviraj's big 6 pm announcement: Not the trailer, but...

Once all the money matters were sorted, the next step, thought fans, would be the trailer of Empuraan, given that the teaser came more than a month ago, and since then, Prithviraj has only done a host of character introductions. So, when he posted on social media on March 17 that there’d be an update only a day later, fans had mighty hopes. Well, they were not entirely dashed, because although there was no sign of the trailer, the actor-director announced a achievement for the film. L2: Empuraan will be the first Malayalam cinema to release on IMAX.

Meanwhile, now that Prithviraj is back after his schedule for director SS Rajamouli’s next with Mahesh Babu, the actor-filmmaker is busy prepping to begin a whirlwind promotional tour, starting with Mumbai on March 20 and, reportedly, ending in Bengaluru on March 25. The trailer is likely to be launched at the event in Mumbai.

This time around, besides the core cast that includes Prithviraj, Indrajit Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Saikumar, Baiju Santhosh, Fazil, Sachin Khedekar, Saniya Iyappan and Nandhu, who will reprise their characters from the original film, newer additions include, Abhimanyu Singh, Jerome Flynn, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Kishore, Eriq Ebouaney, Andrea Tivadar, among others.

L2: Empuraan is expected to shed light on Stephen Nedumpally aka Khureshi Ab’raam’s (Mohanlal) past, the Illuminati, with a lead-in to the final chapter of the trilogy, featuring a villain as powerful and influential as Khureshi. In keeping with Stephen’s all-white ensemble transition to all-black as Khureshi, Empuraan is also expected to be a lot darker in treatment.
