Malayalam cinema in 2024 saw its biggest film ever with Manjummel Boys emerging to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time. Mollywood would hope to repeat the success with movies such as Prithviraj’s L2: Empuraan slated for release in March. But for January 2025, Rekhachithram has emerged to be the top performer – scoring both in terms of box office numbers and audience love. Let’s take a look at the top three movies from Malayalam in January 2025.
Rekhachithram, starring Asif Ali along with Anaswara Rajan, tops the list with Rs 51.25 crore in worldwide collections, as per industry tracker Sacnilk. The film, directed by Jofin T Chacko, emerged to be the first blockbuster from Malayalam in 2025. The unique plot of Rekhachithram, which explores the genre of alternative history, follows a cop (Asif Ali) as he sets out to find the truth behind a woman going missing from a film set in 1985. Manoj K. Jayan also appears in a key role along with Siddique, Jagadish, Zarin Shihab, Saikumar, Harisree Ashokan and Indrans. The film is still running in over 160 screens in its fourth week at the box office.
Tovino Thomas opened the Mollywood box office for 2025 with his action thriller, Identity. The film started on a good note upon its release on January 2, 2025, collecting Rs 1.8 crore on its opening day. The action thriller, with its too many twists, failed to keep the momentum at the box office, earning Rs 16.9 crore in worldwide collections, as per Sacnilk. The action-packed film revolves around a sketch artist, a cop and an eyewitness in a murder case. While Tovino plays artist Haran, Vinay Rai is seen as the cop and Trisha is the eyewitness. Identity made its OTT premiere on Zee5 on January 31, 2025. You can also watch Identity on OTTplay Premium.
Mammootty-starrer Dominic and the Ladies' Purse was a much-awaited film, especially because it marked the Malayalam directorial debut of Gautham Vasudev Menon. An investigative thriller, the film opened to mixed reviews on January 23, 2025, and settled for a decent start at the box office. As the film completes one week at the box office, its worldwide earnings stand at Rs 14.5 crore on January 31, 2025, as per Sacnilk. Gokul Suresh, Viji Venkatesh, and Sushmitha Bhat are also part of Dominic and the Ladies' Purse.
Identity is currently in the second spot but its total collections could be overtaken by Mammootty’s Dominic and the Ladies' Purse, which is still running in theatres.
Another major release of the month was Pravinkoodu Shappu, starring Basil Joseph as a cop along with Soubin Shahir and Chemban Vinod. The film, which was released on January 16, 2025, secured mostly positive reviews but has not had an impressive run at the box office with Rs 5.19 crore registered in worldwide collections, so far.
Ennu Swantham Punyalan, another film which stars Anaswara Rajan along with Arjun Ashokan and Balu Varghese in the lead, was released a day after Rekhachithram. But the film too did not leave much of a mark and with worldwide collections at Rs 2.6 crore.
Basil Joseph's Ponman and Vineeth Sreenivasan’s Oru Jaathi Jathakam also released in theatres on January 30 and 31, respectively. We need to see how these films will perform in the coming days.
