Episode 8 of Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters finally provided answers to the question about why Colonel Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell) was going against the agency he helped set up. Lee, as it turns out, is not a great fan of Titans, given that he lost the love of his life, Dr Keiko Muira, to some creepy crawlies from Hollow Earth. But without the map that she and her husband Bill Randa put together about possible Titan sightings, he could do little about avenging her loss. Now that he has the road map to all things Titan, a small army to follow him and an arsenal to set his plan in motion, Shaw is determined to keep the monsters where they belong – in Hollow Earth.
In Episode 8, he manages to seal one, with a potentially cascading effect, while his second attempt becomes the set up for a trip down to Hollow Earth. The timeline of events on the show, suggest netizens, should tie in neatly with the period between Godzilla (2014) and Godzilla King of the Monsters (2019), with some suggesting that Shaw’s detonations at some of the portals triggers the rest to open up and allow the monsters to surface. “Lee Shaw’s attempts to close all portals accidentally opens all of them, causing KOTM,” wrote one user, while another chimed in that the rescue operation of the Randa kids and May from Hollow Earth will reveal that Keiko also survived the fall.
Audiences are hopeful that the next two episodes will play out in Hollow Earth, with a lot more monster action and Godzilla joining the party yet again to ensure that the Titans stay where they are meant to be, with, of course, a little help from Col Shaw. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Episode 9 drops on Apple TV+ on January 5, with the season finale on January 12.
