Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area, a spinoff of Netflix's hugely popular Spanish series Money Heist (La Casa de Papel), debuted its official trailer on Thursday, just in time for its June 24 premiere date.
Alex Pina's original crime drama ran for five seasons and featured a group of criminals who committed a series of heists. The Korean version, executive produced by Pina, is set against the backdrop of North and South Korea's reunification and revolves around The Professor (Yoo Ji-tae), who approaches Tokyo (Jun Jong-seo) with a plot to steal 4 trillion won from the Korea Unified Mint. To pull it off, he organized a top-notch crew of thieves, but pandemonium erupts when hostages are kidnapped, prompting the formation of a combined task team led by South Korean negotiator Seon Woojin (Kim Yunjin) and former North Korean special agent Cha Moohyuk (Kim Seung-o) to stop them.
The series was first announced in November 2020, directed by Kim Hong-sun and written by Ryu Yong-jae, Kim Hwan-chae, and Choe Sung-jun.
The previously unveiled teaser art piques fans' excitement about these reinvented characters. Fans got their first glimpse of the striking traditional Hahoe masks worn by this band of thieves, as well as a new squad dressed in Money Heist's characteristic red jumpsuits.
Park Hae-Soo, who appeared in Netflix's Squid Game, plays Berlin. Squid Game, which is also available in Korean, is Netflix's most-watched series of all time; Money Heist's final three seasons hold three of the top five spots on that list.
The series is produced by BH Entertainment and Zium Content.
This isn't Netflix's only money-laundering endeavour in the works. In November, the streaming service authorised a spinoff of the original Spanish series centred on the popular character Berlin, played by Pedro Alonso as Andrés de Fonollosa. The show will premiere in 2023.
