The release of Monsieur Spade next year has already created quite a buzz among lovers of the French ‘legendary’ detective. Premiering on January 14, 2024, on AMC, AMC+ and Acorn TV, the six-episode miniseries is based on the protagonist of Dashiel Hammett’s novel The Maltese Falcon, Monsieur Sam Spade.
Created, written, and executive produced by Scott Frank and Tom Fontana, with the former also serving as the director, Monsieur Spade features an iconic cast, primarily starring Golden Globe and BAFTA-winner Clive Owen as the protagonist Sam Spade, Cara Blossom as Teresa, Denis Ménochet as Police Chief, Louise Bourgoin as Marguerite Devereaux, Matthew Beard as George Fitzsimmons, and Jonathan Zaccaï as Phiippe Saint-Andre.
The official synopsis by AMC Network reads, “Monsieur Spade centers around the infamous protagonist of American writer Dashiel Hammett’s 1930 classic novel The Maltese Falcon. The year is 1963, and the legendary Detective Sam Spade (Owen) is enjoying his retirement in the South of France. By contrast to his days as a private eye in San Francisco, Spade’s life in Bozouls is peaceful and quiet.”
“But the rumored return of his old adversary will change everything. Six beloved nuns have been brutally murdered at the local convent. As the town grieves, secrets emerge, and new leads are established. Spade learns that the murders are somehow connected to a mysterious child who is believed to possess great powers.”
The trailer for the series was dropped on November 17, 2023. It featured an action-packed sequence of events, that forcefully rouse a blissful Monsieur Spade into Detective Spade again, featuring brutal interrogations, flipping criminals over the shoulder, and the saving of innocent lives.
