Duniya Vijay made inroads in Telugu cinema in 2023, when he was cast as the antagonist in Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Veera Simha Reddy. The actor-filmmaker, whose Bheema ended Sandalwood’s box office drought in 2024 and is currently working on his next directorial, City Lights, in which he launches his daughter Monisha, with Vinay Rajkumar in the lead, is now adding another feather to his illustrious hat.
Vijay will now make his Kollywood debut, having been roped in to be a part of Sundar C’s Mookuthi Amman 2, which has Nayanthara in the title role. The muhurtha of the film was held in Chennai on March 6, during which Vijay’s casting was announced, along with that of Regina Cassandra, Yogi Babu, Abhinaya, Ineya, Garuda Raam, Singampuli, Vichu Vishwanath, Ajay Ghosh, and Myna Nandhini, among others. Vijay took to social media to announce his Kollywood debut and thanked Sundar C for the opportunity.
While Nayanthara reprises her role from the original, this time around, she and husband Vignesh Shivan will serve as co-producers along with Sundar C and Khushbu. The film’s music is by Hip Hop Tamizha Adhi, with Gopi Amarnath serving as cinematographer. The fantasy comedy Mookuthi Amman released in 2020 and had a direct-to-OTT outing. Barring Nayanthara, no other cast member from the original is being repeated.
Besides his directorial City Lights, Vijay is also working on Landlord, which has him collaborate with Gentleman and Guru Shishyaru director and Kaatera writer Jadeshaa K Hampi. Raj B Shetty plays the antagonist in the film that is set in the 90s, which, like Kaatera, also revolves around the struggle for land and existence. The film, which was shot in specially erected sets to recreate a 90s village, will be a 2025 release. Vijay’s daughter Monica will make her film debut with Landlord, as his onscreen daughter.
