Ever since the multiverse was broken wide open in Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans are always on the lookout for more cross-overs to make their way into upcoming Marvel films. So when Jared Leto took form as the Morbius, naturally fans had their own theories about the film. When its trailer was released, netizens picked up hints that Spider-Man could exist in the Morbius’ universe. The fact that the trailers feature Michael Keaton reprising his role as The Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) also reinforced the fan theory. Recently, Morbius director Daniel Espinosa set the record straight.

In a conversation with Cinema Blend, the director said that a version of Spider-Man did exist in Morbius’ universe. He went on to talk about how, in the Marvel comics, the concept of the multiverse was not new. There were different universes, all of which featured the same characters but in different versions. So in every universe, there would be a different version of the heroes, be it Iron Man, Spider-Man or Morbius. The MCU had approached the concept in a slightly different way, although the principal idea of it was the same. “In all universes, there has to be a Spider-Man or a Spider-Woman,” added the filmmaker.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man had also made an appearance in Tom Hardy’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage, in a post-credits scene.

In addition to Jared Leto starring as the titular character, Morbius also features Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson.

Morbius will hit theatres on April 1, 2022, in the languages of English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
