It’s been a dull start of the year for Kannada cinema as far as OTT releases go. There were many highly anticipated films, that reportedly have a digital streaming partner on board, and yet, not one made it to OTT in January 2025. The last major Kannada original OTT release was Shivarajkumar’s Bhairathi Ranagal, which came on Amazon Prime Video for Christmas last year.
While the delay of films like Kiccha Sudeep’s Max and Upendra’s UI is being attributed to the arrival of Pushpa 2 The Rule on January 30 on Netflix, in 5 languages, the fact that HD prints of both Kannada films are available online is a cause for worry.
Sharan’s horror comedy Choo Mantar recently completed 25 days at the box office, and is, according to the team, a theatrical success. The film has Sharan has an exorcist, called in to explore the supernatural activities in a mansion in far off Uttarakhand. Directed by Karvva fame Navaneeth, the film also stars Aditi Prabhudeva, Chikkanna, Meghana Gaonkar and Prabhu Mundkur, among others.

The release of Kiccha Sudeep’s Max was said to have been hurriedly announced for Christmas 2024 because of a decision by the producer Kalaippuli S Thanu, who, according to sources, would be taking home the revenue from the digital and satellite rights deals, while the leading man would enjoy the theatrical revenue. Max’s satellite and digital rights were, reportedly, sold to Zee Network and the film was expected to drop on Zee5 in January, but it didn’t, so now, the hope is that it will be available to stream anytime soon.

There was a lot of confusion about the streaming rights of Upendra’s UI, with speculation that it had been snapped up by Sun Network, a platform that houses several of the actor-filmmaker’s films. However, the team dispelled these rumours and sources suggested that Zee Network is where the rights rest. However, Zee has now announced that the TV premiere is imminent, with no word on the OTT release, fuelling further speculation that the digital rights may have remained unsold or are with another platform. Zee has, after all, for a while, only been picking TV rights.

Aniish’s romantic comedy Aaram Aravinda Swamy was said to have got an OTT partner on board some time ago, with the film, according to sources, getting a pay-per-view deal. Although it has been more than a month since its theatrical release, the film is yet to stream.

RJ Pradeepa’s long association with Zee Network fuelled rumours that his debut feature production would be snapped up by the platform. There’s been no news on that front, but the buzz is that the film, which stars Rakesh Adiga, Prabhu Mundkur, Suneel Raoh, Poorna Mysuru, among others, will be on the platform shortly.
