Mr. & Mrs. Mahi, starring Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor, is all set to make its OTT debut this weekend. Yes, the romantic sports drama will drop on Netflix at midnight on July 26, 2024. The film is making its way to streaming nearly two months after its theatrical run. The debut of the Sharan Sharma-directed film on May 31, 2024, left critics divided.
Mr. & Mrs. Mahi plot summary and main characters
Mr. & Mrs. Mahi depicts the arranged marriage between the doctor Mahima and the former cricketer Mahendra. Their shared moniker, Mahi, makes them Mr. and Mrs. Mahi, much like Mahendra Singh Dhoni's moniker. Cricket becomes a shared passion very quickly. After some time has passed, Mr. Mahi, a cricketer who never made it, watches his wife hitting sixes off tennis balls and urges her to follow her dream of being a cricketer. With her husband's support, Mrs. Mahi, a practicing doctor, bravely quits her job to pursue a career in cricket.
Meanwhile, with 2.5 lakh, Mr. & Mrs. Mahi broke Fighter's record for the highest advance ticket sales for a Hindi film in 2024, thanks to the subsidised prices on Cinema Lovers Day. On its opening day, the film made Rs. 6.85 crore, which was the seventh-highest opening for a Hindi film in 2024. The film has earned a total of Rs. 51.40 crore as of June 20, 2024. This includes Rs. 42.63 crore in India and Rs. 8.77 crore elsewhere.
Director Sharan Sharma's inspiration
Earlier, when News18 questioned Sharma about the concept behind Mr. & Mrs. Mahi, the filmmaker revealed that their initial thought was that many Indian brides originate from families that strictly prohibit their wives from working post-wedding. The ideology is still there. However, what if a bride marries into a household that bestows wings on her? This was the origin of the film's concept. However, as they advanced through the draft, they started to become more invested in those aspects.
The film marked the second outing between Rajkummar and Janhvi after the horror comedy Roohi.
