When Deepak Subramanya was offered the lead role in Mr Rani, he knew that getting into the skin of the character was not going to be a cakewalk. In the film, Deepak plays Raja, who finds stardom posing as an actress called Rani. Playing an actress, though, was not just about the costume and makeup for Deepak.
The actor had to shed weight and muscle mass, for which he went on a single-meal-per-day diet. At the time, director Madhu Chandra had promised Deepak that he’d wind up the film in a couple of months, but it eventually took more than a year. Throughout this period. Deepak continued to maintain the physique required to play Rani.
The actor knocked off 15 kilos, and would then spend several hours in makeup to play Rani. “I had to wear a body suit to get the curves of a woman, and shave twice a day to ensure my skin was smooth with no stubbles. However, this continuing process meant that by day 3, my skin felt so raw that I had a break out. We had to take a break for a few days to let the rashes smoothen out, before starting off again,” says Deepak.
The film, he adds, revolves around his love for a superstar actress called Deepika (Parvathy Nair). While Deepak’s character Raja is a big-time fan, on account of his ‘deception’ they become rivals. How he figures out a way to meet Deepika as Raja is a major plot point, reveals the actor.
Mr Rani, meanwhile, reunites Parvathy with Vascodigama maker Madhu Chandra, who also has a role in the film as a filmmaker who works only with superstars. Also starring Srivatsa in a pivotal role, Mr Rani is one of 7 films releasing in theatres on February 7. It will be in competition with films like Anamadheya Ashok Kumar, Adhipatra, Gajarama, among others.
