The story is based on something that happened to Sagarika Bhattacharya in real life. Sagarika, her husband Anup, and their two children all lived together at the time. They uprooted their lives and relocated to Norway in order to find work there. In 2011, Barnevernet, also known as the Norwegian Child Welfare Services, took the children away from their care because they were not treated well as children. They started by making an unsuccessful appeal to a court in Norway.

After some time had gone by, they asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Government of India for help. Prior to this happening, Sagarika and her husband had divorced, and their children's custody was awarded to the sibling of their biological father. In 2013, following a court struggle that lasted for two years and was brought to the Calcutta High Court, she was awarded custody of her child following intervention by the Indian government.

Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway has been extensively shot in Estonia. A few reviews of the film are already out.
