Speaking about Mrs Deshpande, Nagesh Kukunoor said that, as it is an adaptation of the French show La Mante, they needed two themes: the main character and the relationships.

Without giving any spoilers, Kukunoor said, "The relationships were so wonderful that I felt that an Indian adaptation would play very well. But the key thing was who would play the titular character. Right from the time when we co-wrote the show, there was only one name, and that was her (Madhuri Dixit). Once that thing popped ahead, then everything we started writing was for her, and when it got done, we spoke about that many times, so let's just wait. She said yes."
