Kaantha, the next big Tamil release, is gearing up to hit big screens on November 14. First widely regarded as the biopic of Tamil cinema’s first superstar MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, and then dismissed by the makers, citing it has nothing to do with any real-life personality, troubles are brewing for Kaantha which is now facing legal hurdles.

When the announcement about Kaantha took place, followed by the promotional materials and posters, it was not just another period flick headlined by Dulquer Salmaan. This time, it had a little more of address, thanks to rumours fuelling it to be the biopic of Tamil cinema’s first superstars MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar. He had reigned the Tamil cinema with an unprecedented success and stardom, with mere only 14 films to his credit. However, he also had a massive fall after arrested for murder of a film journalist. Thanks to his popularity in the 1940s-50s Madras presidency where the film studio culture thrived, Kaantha trailer too shows similar story of an actor, fictionally called TK Mahadevan, who becomes a protégé of sorts, and a superstar.
With the comparisons becoming inevitable to MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar’s rise and fall, the team of Kaantha had recently revealed that the film story is completely fictional. Both Rana and Dulquer, had firmly put it out that Kaantha is a film that might have 'loose ideas from different stories' but affirmed that it is a fictional film, and certainly not based on the life of MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar.

However, it looks like Kaantha has some troubles brewing up on the legal side, given the family of late superstar had challenged the makers at the court. This has resulted the Chennai court to issue notice to Kaantha makers in staying the release of the film. As per reports, Bhagavathar’s grandson, B Thiagarajan, had challenged the makers, claiming that the film is depicting his superstar grandfather as someone who died in poverty. The complaint was also that the makers never sought any permission from the family, even as Kaantha loos fictional but bears resemblances to some real-life characters.
The family of MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar is seeking injunction on the release, while the makers of Kaantha are enroute for their November 14 release. The court, on the other hand, has scheduled its next hearing on November 18. However, from Rana Daggubati's side, replying to the rumours on the case, he said, "It’s pretty baseless the film has no real reference at all."
