Debutant Avinash Vijaykumar’s My Hero, which released in theatres in August 2024, after a successful film festival run, is headed to OTT. Headlined by Hollywood actor Djilali Rez Kallah and child actor Vedik Kaushik of Drama Juniors fame, My Hero will be on Amazon Prime Video from May 30, however, it is likely to be on the streamer’s store for rent only under TVOD.
TITLE | My Hero |
DIRECTOR | Avinash Vijaykumar |
CAST | Djilali Rez Kallah, Vedik Kaushik, Eric Roberts, Dattanna, Prakash Belawadi |
STREAMING PLATFORM | Amazon Prime Video |
STREAMING DATE | May 30, 2025 |
The film, which also brought Julia Roberts’ brother Eric (of The Dark Knight fame) to Kannada cinema, features Prakash Belawadi, Niranjan Deshpande, Ankita Amar, Tanuja Krishnappa and Dattanna on the cast.
Avinash, reportedly, wrote the script based on two real-life incidents - one was about a young boy from an oppressed caste being mutilated after he touched a religious idol during a procession and another, involving Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone’s Varanasi visit to conduct Hindu Tithi Shradh rituals for his son. The writer-director combined both these instances for his story about an American who comes to India to perform Hindu rituals for his deceased son.
Djilali Rez Kallah is Gary, the man headed to the Maheshwar Ghats in Madhya Pradesh to conduct rituals for his late son. In the days before the ceremony, Gary is shown around town by a young guide, Vishwa (Vedik Kaushik), and the duo soon develop a friendship. When Gary wonders why Vishwa works as a guide instead of going to school, a heart-wrenching story is revealed about what led the youngster to run away from his home in Karnataka to Madhya Pradesh.
My Hero was widely lauded for the hard-hitting subject it addressed and dealt with delicately. The film is narrated from the perspective of a foreigner, who documents his time in the country and the incidents leading to the young boy’s ostracisation from his village, which is then published as a book.
