Hansika Motwani, who last starred in a Telugu film in 2019 - Tenali Ramakrishna BA LLB - returned to the industry with an redemption thriller My Name is Shruthi in 2023. The film was helmed by Srinivas Omkar and produced by Burugu Ramya Prabhakar under Vaishnavi Arts. The thriller also starred Prema, Murali Sharma, Pooja Ramachandran, Raja Ravindra, Praveen, Aadukalam Naren.

The film released in theatres in November and had a modest run at the box office, while garnering critical acclaim and praise for Hansika Motwani’s performance, the director’s treatment of the organ mafia. Nearly six weeks after its theatrical release, My Name is Shruthi is out on OTT. Leading streamer Amazon Prime Video premiered the film globally on December 29.

While the director pitched this story to several actresses before, he revealed that Hansika was very forthcoming in her responses to the script. The fact that the actress’ mother was a dermatologist helped her understand the seriousness of the subject better. In several pre-release interviews, the actress shared My Name is Shruthi was close to her heart and appreciated the filmmaker’s intent.

Srinivas Omkar understood the inner workings of the scam after listening to a real-life incident from a junior artiste. The director researched extensively on the subject for several years, showcasing how women are trapped from Nepal, made to stay in Mumbai’s brothel houses, facing inhuman treatment. With a cinematic spin, the film is reimagined as thriller about a woman standing up for a victim.

Authentic in its treatment of a dark subject, My Name is Shruthi remains consistently engaging, extracting one of Hansika’s finest performances in Telugu cinema to date. Mark K Robin scored the music for the film which was edited by Chota K Prasad and had cinematography by Kishore Boyidapu. Tips acquired the music rights of the film.
