Myyal is an upcoming Tamil film set to release on May 23. Starring Sethu and Samriddhi Tara in the lead roles, the film is directed by Elumalai, who had earlier worked with Prabhu Solomon as associate director, Myyal is expected to be a romantic thriller. Speaking about the film, Elumalai said the starting point for the film came from Sethu, who he had known since the duo worked in Mynaa in which the actor played a supporting character.
“We had an idea to do a film together since then, but due to few reasons, it got delayed. After about 13 years, Sethu called me asking to direct a film, which has script and story by Jeyamohan sir. I came to know that it a rural-based story,” Elumalai said. The filmmaker adds that he was first hesitant to take up the story written by someone else, but was encouraged by Sethu, along with the team, to direct Myyal.
Adding on to this, Sethu talks about the transition from acting as supporting character to lead role, “It was a tough journey, because I never got opportunities and the take off that I expected from Tamil after Mynaa. I was looking for a Tamil film which will be on strong directorial hands. In this film, I could find space for me to perform, and feel I have done justice to the role.”
At the same time, for Samriddhi Tara who plays the female lead, she was auditioned for the role. “The team had come to Kerala to hold auditions. I had not known anything about the project, before I began shooting. In fact, I see Tamil film industry more comfortable and likeable than Malayalam film industry. The cast and crew also gave me enough and more than wanted for me to perform better,” Samriddhi adds.

Myyal focusses on the lives of people who live in the mountains, the director mentions. Expalining further, Elumalai says, “It is about a woman who comes from the community who does black magic, and a man who comes from underprivileged background and has to steal for food. The film explores the lives of these two people, how they fall in love and the difficulties they face. Mostly, it is for economically weaker sections who face difficulties in their love in society, and Myyal speaks about the love of the underprivileged.”
Sethu adds on to this that he was taken to these mountainous regions to understand the socio-economic conditions of people who lived there, for his character understanding and observation. Meanwhile, for Samriddhi, she says that it was Elumalai who had given the detailed sketch of her role.
Myyal was shot within the sets built in and around Kalrayan Hills in Tamil Nadu. “We did not want to replicate the feeling that Mynaa gave because that film too is set against the backdrop of hills,” Elumalai says.
Starring Sethu, Samriddhi Tara, PL, Thenappan, Supergood Subramani, Rathnakala, CM Bala, and others, Myyal is produced by Iconcinecreations LLP, Anupama Vikram Singh, Venugopal R and has music by Amargeeth S.
