Mammootty’s critically-acclaimed film Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam is gearing up for its OTT release soon. The OTT rights of the movie, which is also produced by the megastar under his banner Mammootty Kampany, is bagged by Netflix that had also purchased the rights of his previous movie CBI 5: The Brain. The film is expected to drop on the OTT platform on February 23.

Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, which is helmed by Lijo Jose Pellissery, had hit theatres in January after a rousing reception at its world premiere at the International Film Festival of Kerala in December 2022.

The movie, which has Mammootty essaying the role of a theatre artiste named James, who suddenly wakes up after a siesta and begins to behave like a Tamilian named Sundaram, who had reportedly gone missing and was presumed dead. His personality confuses the Malayalis who had accompanied him as well as Sundaram’s family in the village. The movie, scripted by S Hareesh, is set extensively in Tamil Nadu and was praised for the megastar’s “effortless” performance as well as cinematographer Theni Easwar’s visuals.

The OTT release will also benefit a lot of viewers who had caught the movie in theatres in Kerala, but without subtitles. The film has dialogues in both Tamil and Malayalam, and as Mammootty put it, “It would appear like a Tamil movie for the Malayalam audience and vice versa”. The subtitles would help understand the film better for the audience, who aren’t familiar with the other language.

Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam also has Ramya Pandian, Ashokan, Ashwath Ashokkumar, Rajesh Sharma, Vipin Atley, Poo Ramu and Thennavan as part of the cast. The streaming platform, which will release Unni Mukundan’s Malikappuram on February 15, is expected to drop Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam in the last week of February or first week of March.

The film also marked the debut production venture of Mammootty Kampany, which has since then bankrolled Rorschach as well as the superstar’s upcoming movies such as Jeo Baby’s Kaathal – The Core and Roby Varghese Raj’s Kannur Squad.

Meanwhile, Mammootty’s latest release Christopher, which hit theatres last week, will begin streaming on Amazon Prime Video in March 2023.
