Narivetta star Tovino Thomas reacts to whether his political thriller depicts Muthanga agitation of 2003: ‘We cannot claim that this…’

After the action-packed thriller Identity and Empuraan, Tovino Thomas is gearing up for the next big release of the year. The upcoming Malayalam film, titled Narivetta, will release in theatres on May 15, 2025. Narivetta has already caught the attention of the Kerala audience with its gripping trailer and posters, that hint at an agitation and the police action. This has sparked speculations as to whether the movie depicts the Muthanga agitation that happened in Kerala in 2003.

Tovino Thomas on whether Narivetta is based on Muthanga stir?

Tovino Thomas stars as a cop in the upcoming political thriller Narivetta. During a recent press meet, the team of Narivetta was asked if the film is based on the Muthanga agitation, which caused quite a stir in Kerala during the early 2000s. However, Narivetta director Anuraj Manohar and the lead hero Tovino Thomas denied the film being linked to the 2003 agitation.

"We are telling a very important subject in the film. But it is still a fictional story, and we have drawn inspiration from real-life incidents. But it is not a shot-by-shot documentation of any particular incident,” explained Tovino.

“We cannot claim that is what happened, or that this is history. We have added fictional elements. My character is also fictional, and most of the characters are also fictional. We have also taken several cinematic liberties,” he added.

The Lucifer star also pointed out that, as important as the issue that is addressed in the movie is also how they have portrayed the story, calling out the efforts of the technical team of Narivetta. Promising an engaging film from start to finish that will 'make you think', Tovino urged everyone to watch the movie in theatres.

The film also stars Suraj Venjaramoodu and Cheran.

For the unversed, the police and the tribal people clashed in Muthanga in Kerala that led to casualties in 2003.
