The Malayalam film Udal is all set to get a Bollywood remake. It was announced that the drama thriller will soon be remade in Hindi, with a cast led by Naseeruddin Shah.

According to a report in Pinkvilla, in the remake, Shah will essay the character portrayed by Indrans in the original. Ratheesh Reghunandan, who helmed the original Malayalam film in his directorial debut, will return to helm the Bollywood remake as well. The Hindi film would reportedly be bankrolled by Gokulam Gopalan, who had produced the original film as well.

The report stated that the makers of the remake were currently working on the film’s pre-production,and were planning to get the film on floors soon. Shah’s character was in the process of being designed at the moment, and the makers were hopeful that the audiences will appreciate seeing the veteran actor in a new shade in the film. An official announcement regarding the remake is yet to be made by the makers.

Udal revolved around the story of a visually impaired man, portrayed by Indrans, who terrorises a young couple in a house. In addition to Indrans, the claustrophobic revenge thriller also featured Durga Krishna and Dhyan Sreenivasan in pivotal roles.

The film was shot entirely during the pandemic. Although the film had initially been planned as a direct to OTT release, the makers had opted to release the film on the big screen after positive responses from audiences during its previews. The film was released in theatres on May 20.

The review of the film on OTTplay reads “Although Udal boasts of the talents of stars such as Indrans and Dhyan Sreenivasan, Ratheesh Reghunandan fails to weave a compelling narrative out of the claustrophobic thriller”.

Udal will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. An OTT release date is yet to be announced by the makers.
