Nayanthara recently made headlines on the sidelines of her documentary film release Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale. She penned an open letter to actor-producer Dhanush for not granting permission to use the footage from their film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. In an interview recently, Nayanthara opened up about the issue and addressed in particular what went wrong which caused her to write the open letter to her Yaaradi Nee Mohini co-star.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Nayanthara was asked how she found the courage to go against a prominent personality like Dhanush. She said that the issue was never meant to be raised just before the documentary's release and revealed that the legal notice arrived just in time for them to process and react.
For the uninitiated, Nayanthara penned a three-page letter lashing out at Dhanush for not letting them use footage from Naanum Rowdy Dhan, while also calling him out for his rude and arrogant behaviour.
In the interview, Nayanthara acknowledged that even though both parties have support, she said that the controversy was not created as a PR stunt. She added, “The controversy happened because I spoke out, and I wanted to speak in public. I personally genuinely tried to reach out to him so that I can have direct answer on what is the issue. There were number of calls Vignesh (Shivan) had with his manager, through our friends who are friends with him. But none of that worked. We came to a point where we did not want to use the clips, and we were okay if he did not want to give an NOC because it is his film.”
However, Nayanthara wanted to use the four lines that Vignesh Shivan wrote in Naanum Rowdy Dhaan that summarised their relationship, and that is what they wanted to use as well. “I am not someone who usually calls someone for obligations. But I thought the lines were very important for the documentary. I genuinely thought he will be the first person to say okay to,” the actor said as she clarified that she and Dhanush were not born enemies and had been good friends before.
"I spoke to the manager (Which I usually don't) and said we are okay not having NOC. But we wanted just to use those four lines, which you don't want us to use as well. But just get me a phone call with him to understand what is the issue, if he is angry with us,” Nayanthara said.
Dhanush produced Naanum Rowdy Dhaan which is directed by Vignesh Shivan, starring Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi. The film marked the time when Nayanthara fell in love with Vignesh and eventually got married.
