Nayanthara, who made her Bollywood debut last year with Shah Rukh Khan in Jawan, is currently making huge headlines for some controversial issues
Still from Annapoorani
Directed by Nilesh Krishnaa, Annapoorani made its theatrical release last year on December 1, 2023. But the Tamil-language movie did not garner much attention, and also did not make much at the box office. The movie tells the story about Annapoorani (Nayanthara), who dreams to become the no.1 Chef in India. Sadly her father (Achyuth Kumar), who is a priest in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu, puts restrictions on her life and opposes her dream as they are Brahmin, and cannot touch meat. However, despite such strict parents, she secretly starts doing a hotel management course to pursue her MBA.
The movie has been receiving severe backlash ever since it was released on Netflix. Even though Annapoorani has passed the censor board certification and was released in the theatres, netizens claimed that it hurt religious sentiments. Hence, within no time Netflix removed the movie on January 11, 2024.
Now after nine days, Nayanthara has finally opened up and penned a heartbreaking letter, addressing the issue, and apologised officially for creating inconvenience with people's sentiments. The most shocking thing for her is, despite passing the censor board certification and releasing the theatres last year, it received so much resentment when released on Netflix.
While asking for forgiveness and apologising Nayanthara shared that she herself wholeheartedly believes in God and frequently visits temples across the nation. She further claimed that the sole purpose of Annapoorani is to inspire and uplift people's courage. She and her team never wanted to cause distress to their fans.
However, surprisingly, Netflix did not announce any official statement yet about the issue. Instead, without any prior notice, the streaming giant removed Annapoorani unexpectedly. Seems like this hurt Nayanthara’s sentiments deeply. She further shared that in her twenty years of career span, her every effort was to spread positivity and inspiration.
Meanwhile, Nayanthara has some amazing projects till 2026. From NT 81, Test, Auto Jaani, Mannanggatti to Lion, she has three movies back-to-back in 2024, one in 2025, and the last one in 2026. Nevertheless, her Lady Superstar 75 is reported to be the highest budget Tamil movie of the actress. It has gone on floor last year, as is backed by ZEE Studios and directed by Nilesh Krishnaa.
