The sequel is based on Xu Zhonglin's 16th century novel, The Investiture of the Gods. The story of the movie follows Ne Zha and his friend Ao Bing. After the sacrifice, only Ne Zha’s body can be recreated, which means he can carry Ao Bing’s spirit within himself. Ne Zha calls on Ao Bing's spirit during his fight against Master Shen.

The sequel continues the story of the rebellious demigod Ne Zha, after a major catastrophe in the orginal movie where he and his friend Ao Bing were nearly destroyed. This destruction leads to Master Taiyi Zhenren use the mystical Seven-Colored Lotus power to rebuild Ne Zha and Ao Bing, leading to them share one body and undertake trials to become immortals and save their fates from a Dragon King.
