While fans are eagerly waiting for his debut directorial Barroz, it’s his courtroom drama film Neru that’s poised for Christmas release. Malayalam superstar Mohanlal had earlier revealed that Barroz will hit the cinemas on December 21. However, recent reports suggest that Neru, written by Santhi Mayadevi and helmed by Drishyam director Jeethu Joseph, will now be released on the aforementioned date, instead of Barroz.
This means that the Mohanlal-starrer will clash with Prabhas’ action thriller Salaar and Shah Rukh Khan’s comedy-drama Dunki, which are also releasing around the same time. In Neru, Mohanlal plays a lawyer. He was last seen as a lawyer 13 years ago in Janakan, which also starred Suresh Gopi.
Priyamani plays the leading lady opposite Mohanlal in Neru. They were previously seen together in Grandmaster. The cast also includes Anaswara Rajan (known for her performance in Super Sharanya), Jagadish, Siddique and Ganesh Kumar.
Neru marks Jeethu and Mohanlal’s fifth collaboration, following 12th Man. According to Jeethu, Neru will not be a suspense thriller like his previous films and instead it will focus on courtroom procedures.
Mohanlal’s upcoming projects
According to reports, Mohanlal will begin shooting for Empuraan - the sequel to Lucifer - in October. The first schedule of Empuraan will take place in Delhi and Ladakh. Additionally, the actor is working on his Telugu-Malayalam bilingual film Vrushabha - a pan-India epic period drama that also stars Shanaya Kapoor and Roshan Meka.
Mohanlal’s first release in 2024 will be Malaikottai Vaaliban, which is scheduled to hit theatres on January 25. The film, helmed by Lijo Jose Pellissery, is one of the most anticipated releases for both Mohanlal and Lijo. The movie is expected to have fantasy elements, similar to other Lijo movies. It will feature Mohanlal in a massy avatar.
