Netflix’s latest superhero stint with Jupiter’s Legacy has come to a quick (and abrupt) end. The series, based on Mark Millar and Frank Quitley’s comics of the same name, has been cancelled after its very first season. Millar confirmed the series getting canned on his Twitter account on Wednesday. However, he did not use the word ‘cancelled’ so it is unclear if Netflix has officially scrapped the series.
In his tweet, Millar thanked the team of Jupiter’s Legacy for their hard work in bringing his vision to life, before revealing that the cast’s contracts had been retracted and that they have been informed of the decision.
"I'm really proud of what the team achieved with Jupiter's Legacy and the amazing work everyone did in that origin season," said Millar. "Given where we're going next, we've made the tough call of letting our incredible cast out of their show commitment as we continue to thoughtfully develop all realms of the Jupiter's Legacy saga. We're confident we'll return to it later, and just want to say thanks to you guys for your continued support and to the cast and crew who made this look so great,” he added.
Though none of the main cast has commented on Netflix’s decision yet, the $200 million that was spent on the series did not pay off - Jupiter’s Legacy was met with vastly negative reviews. The plot revolves around a superhero sibling duo who have warring ideologies about using their superpowers and their rift subsequently affects their children, who are also trying to make their place in the world. Starring Josh Duhamel, Leslie Bibb, Elena Kampouris, Matt Lanter and Andrew Horton, Jupiter’s Legacy didn’t earn a lot of praise, with confusing timelines and questionable character development.
However, this news has come with a silver lining for Millar. Though the second season of Jupiter’s Legacy stands cancelled, Netflix has given a confirmation to adapt the Supercrooks comic series into a live-action show. Created in collaboration with Leinil Francis Yu, Supercrooks is set in the same universe as Jupiter’s Legacy but features a new set of villainous superheroes.
Millar explained his decision to take Millarworld in a new direction: “Jupiter's Legacy is a vast and rich space with lots of characters to mine, and so I'm happy to share that our next step here is a live-action version of the Supercrooks comic I created with Leinil Francis Yu a few years back. Given where we're going next, we've made the tough call of letting our incredible cast out of their show commitment as we continue to thoughtfully develop all realms of the Jupiter's Legacy saga.”
The Supercrooks adaptation is expected to go on floors soon.
