The Oscar-winning director has recently opened up to New York Times, that she had already taken the initiative to develop the 5-hour limited project, but Netflix has cut off its budget because it's executives did not find it interesting as the lead character is an "unlikable woman".

”The idea of an unlikable woman wasn't their thing.” Sofia said, "But that's what I'm saying about who's in charge." She has already completed writing half of the series.
About The Custom of the Country
Edith Wharton's novel, The Custom of the Country tells the story of the Spragg family as they move to New York with the hopes of marrying off their daughter, Undine, to a wealthy suitor. There, the nouveau-riche débutante meets Ralph, a lawyer and poet, who becomes the first of her many lovers on her never-ending quest to conquer high society.
