Netflix’s Geeked Week is bringing exciting news for the users of the streaming platform. On the first day of the virtual event - which celebrates fandoms and geek culture - two exciting revelations were made. The trailer for Jean-Claude Van Damme’s The Last Mercenary and the teaser for horror-flick Blood Red Sky were streamed during the event. The two titles are all set to premiere on Netflix in July.
Jean-Claude Van Damme is bringing his expertise in action sequences and signature aura to The Last Mercenary. Directed by Darvid Charhon, this action-comedy follows a mysterious ex-secret service agent whose estranged son is falsely accused of drug trafficking by the government of France. He journeys to the country to uncover the truth behind his son’s detention which is the result of a larger scheme involving a bureaucrat and a mafia gang.
Geeked Week hosts described Van Damme’s character of Richard Brumère as a “legend, world’s most celebrated mercenary, expert driver, pilot and sharpshooter”. The movie, which also stars Alban Ivanov, Samir Decazza, Archibald Al Mahmoud, will premiere on July 30 on Netflix.
The second project which was announced on the first day of this five-day virtual event is German director Peter Thorwarth’s Blood Red Sky. The German/English horror movie follows a woman who has an unexplained illness. She is forced to spring into action when a group of terrorists plan to hijack an overnight flight. In an attempt to protect her son, she must uncover a dark secret and uncover the violence she hides within herself to save the ones she loves. The film stars Peri Baumeister, Graham McTavish and Dominic Purcell.
The production costs for Blood Red Sky, which was shot entirely in Czech Republic in 2020, are rumoured to be a whopping 15 million euros. The movie will be available to stream on Netflix on July 23.
With each day of Netflix Geeked Week following a theme, new information will be revealed about fan-favourite shows and new titles will be introduced in the form of trailers and teasers. The event can be streamed on Netflix’s social media handles.
