The makers of Dark reunited earlier this year to create yet another mind-bending puzzle. Titled 1899, the Netflix original uses a period setting to follow a group of European immigrants who set sail from London to New York City but their journey turns on its head when they find another ship adrift in the middle of the sea. The inherent mystery that envelopes everyone on-board forms the crux of the story.

Netflix confirmed at the global fan event TUDUM 2022 that 1899 will premiere on the streaming service on November 19, 2022.

1899 sees the return of Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar as show creators, following the phenomenal success of their previous venture Dark. The upcoming show comes as part of Friese and bo Odar’s joint multiple-year deal with Netflix to create exclusive content for the streaming giant’s massive subscriber base. Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar’s contract is the first European deal in Netflix’s history.

Speaking about the conception of 1899, the creators have previously shared that the Brexit and European Migrant Crisis served as influences, citing the need for a European collaboration, with respect to both cast and crew, nudged towards the heart of the story.

1899 stars English actress Emily Beecham (Hail, Ceasar!, Into the Badlands) in the lead role with Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, Maciej Musiał, Anton Lesser, and others joining the central cast later. The series had a two-episode premiere on September 12 at the 47th Toronto Internation Film Festival.
