Loosely inspired by the real-life American Samoa team, the film follows its ardent efforts to improve its image and make it through the FIFA Qualifiers after losing to Australia 31-0 more than a decade earlier. Next Goal Wins also parallelly explores the struggles of Coach Thomas Rongen, who was fired from his job when he failed to take the under-20 national football team to the 2011 World Cup.

His only option other than being unemployed? To train the undertrained and unprepared American Samoa team in three weeks to make it to the FIFA Qualifiers of 2014. However, a few days are enough to drive Rongen out of his mind, as the team can barely make it through warm-ups or score a goal. The heartwarming comedy showcases the flaws and follies of humans, along with how they can be converted into one’s strength.
Next Goal Wins stars an impressive cast, along with a cute cameo from Watiti himself. The film features Michael Fassbender as coach Rongen, along with Oscar Kightley, David Fane, Rachel House, Kaimana, Beulah Koale, Will Arnett, Elisabeth Moss, Uli Latekefu, Rhys Darby, Angus Sampson, Luke Hemsworth, Loretta Ables Sayre, and Frankie Adams in prominent roles.
