Following a significant change in the storyline of the Disney+ series Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which saw Anthony Mackie’s character of Sam Wilson take on the mantle of Captain America, Marvel Studios announced a new film series led by Mackie. Tentatively titled Captain America 4, the upcoming sequence of the films will see Sam Wilson, an MCU character portrayed by Anthony Mackie, don the Captain America role after having accepted the title from the previous holder Steve Rogers (played by Chris Evans).

And now, according to the latest report by The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios has roped in Nigerian-American filmmaker Julius Onah to direct Captain America 4. Onah is best known for directing the 2018 sci-fi thriller The Cloverfield Paradox (produced by J.J. Abrams) and the 2019 social thriller Luce. This would be his first association with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Following the announcement of the upcoming Captain America film series, speculations were rife about Chris Evans reprising his role as Steve Rogers, also known as The First Avenger. Evans put an end to the discussion recently through a tweet that read “Sam Wilson is Captain America”.

Although very little is known about the tonal and narrative shift in the upcoming films, Marvel Studios’ Neal Moore revealed to THR that Anthony Mackie’s version will not be similar to that of Chris Evans. Moore added that the character of Sam Wilson is potentially the underdog in every situation which makes him a more ordinary Captain America, especially considering that he doesn’t have the Avengers by his side.

Anthony Mackie began his career in 2002 with Curtis Hanson’s biopic 8 Mile, starring Eminem. Mackie’s other major credits include the Oscar-winning drama The Hurt Locker, The Adjustment Bureau, and Miss Bala.
