Nightbitch, the Amy-Adams-led adaptation of the 2021 bestselling novel of the same name by Rachel Yoder is headed to OTT. The film, directed by Marielle Heller, was initially intended to go straight to OTT, but was given a limited theatrical outing in the US in early December, following its Toronto International Film Festival premiere in September.

The black comedy, which explores the transformative nature of motherhood, gender roles, identity and more, also stars Scoot McNairy, Arleigh Snowden, Emmett Snowden, Mary Holland, Ella Thomas, Archana Rajan, Zoe Chao, Adrienne Rose White, Roslyn Gentle, Stacey Swift, Darius De La Cruz and Jessica Harper is officially headed to Hulu and audiences in India will be able to catch it on Disney+ Hotstar. The film’s streaming premiere has been set as December 27.

Nightbitch has 6-time Oscar nominee Adams play a former artist, whose current full-time occupation is suburban stay-at-home mom for her young son. As a new mother to a very lively toddler, Adams’ character, who goes by Mother in the film, finds herself becoming increasingly bored, frustrated, depressed and angry at the stress and monotonous nature of motherhood, apart from the loss of her earlier identity. Her days as an artist feel like it was a lifetime ago, she says.

With not much support from her husband in the parenting department, what with him away on work at most times, and his often-thoughtless comments, soon enough, she begins to think that her rather uninspiring lifestyle is literally changing her into an animal – a dog, to be precise, by night. She’s furrier, has a heightened sense of smell, and has a tail too. But is she really going full-on doggo, or is it a liberating fantasy that she indulges every time she goes for a run at night? Will she ever be a smart and happy person again?

During its theatrical run, Nightbitch received mixed reviews, with Heller’s direction, Adams’ performance receiving bouquets, while the formulaic writing got the brickbats.
