Guillermo del Toro, who last helmed the 2017 award-winning The Shape of Water, returns with another potential hit, Nightmare Alley. Searchlight Pictures unveiled the first teaser of the psychological thriller recently.
Nightmare Alley is an adaptation of William Gresham’s novel of the same name. The story seems to be set in a travelling circus where the main show is a “supreme oddity,” a strange creature that seems to attract visitors from far and wide.
Bradley Cooper is Stan Carlisle, a carny, who is a master manipulator and joins hands with Dr. Lilith Ritter, female psychiatrist played by Cate Blanchett.
Toni Colette, Willem Dafoe, Rooney Mara, and Richard Jenkins are also part of the star-studded ensemble cast.
This is not the first adaptation of Gresham’s novel that relays a story of the darker side of happy carnivals and sideshows that were popular back in the day. According to Polygon, the 1947 movie starred Tyrone Power and Jon Blondell.
Del Toro and Kim Morgan have adapted the story for screen, which the former said is not a remake of the 40’s movie. In an interview with Collider, del Toro said that his version of Nightmare Alley is devoid of any supernatural elements, and is “just a straight, really dark story.”
