Antara Nandy does not understand Bengali well. She grew up outside Bengal and sings in several languages. Still, she has a connection with her mother tongue, and long wished to work in Bengali. Now her dream is going to be fulfilled.

Antara and her sister Ankita are hugely popular on social media as the Nandy Sisters. Antara’s first Bengali song video, with music by Nilanjan Ghosh, has been released. The 23-year-old singer is overjoyed.

The song, Chandni Raate, shows two young people’s love story. Antara told Anandabazar Online, “I liked the song the first time I heard it. People know me for classical and folk. But I always wanted to sing such songs. And what can be better than a song in my mother tongue?”

Antara, who spent her childhood in Kolkata, first worked as a background singer with A R Rahman. She sang in Hindi and south Indian languages. She also sang in the Mani Rathnam film released last year, Ponniyin Selvan. She said, “My sister and I can sing in 23 languages. Hence we do not want to bind ourselves to a certain industry.”

Nilanjan is also happy. He said, “The song got a good response. Antara is talented. Her capacity is not yet fully explored. She sang with full vigour.”

The song took two months to prepare. Nilanjan said that he did not make the song thinking of Antara. He met Antara at a programme in Kolkata and got stumped by her singing. He thought of making her sing in one of his pieces. Nilanjan is willing to work with her in the future as well. He said, “Antara and her sister are the future. The work they are doing as Nandy Sisters at such a young age is unbelievable.”
