For a parapsychological thriller, debutant director Roshan D’Souza’s Nimitta Matra chose a rather strange release window, hitting theatres along with 6-7 other Kannada films on Valentine’s Day. While the film’s theatrical business suffered among this onslaught of films at the box office, Nimitta Matra is the first of the February 14, 2025 releases to make its way to OTT. The film has been picked up by Sun Network and will begin streaming on Sun NXT on May 30, 2025. It will also be available to stream on OTTplay Premium.

Nimitta Matra is led by Poornachandra Mysore (BB5 ), Arvind Kuplikar (Puksatte Lifeu director) and Sangeetha Rajeev, among others, and is centred on an incident that occurred in Mangaluru 15 years earlier, which continues to have a ripple effect. Poornachandra played an investigative journalist, while Arvind was a cop, both investigating the same case, albeit from different angles.
The story begins at an orphanage in Mangaluru, which is approached by a stranger seeking asylum for a bunch of young children. Although apprehensive at first, the nuns decide to take in the kids, but within days, a massive tragedy strikes, when barring a few children, everyone else ends up dead of severe food poisoning. The nun in charge of the orphanage is suspected to have poisoned the children and is arrested.
Cut to 15 years later, when Bengaluru city witnesses a spate of murders, a special investigation officer, played by Arvind, is assigned to get to the bottom of it. At the same time, a journalist, played by Poornachandra, also ends up on the same investigation, when his sister is found dead in mysterious conditions. Turns out, the Bengaluru murders have a connect with the Mangaluru case. The rest of the narrative follows how the cop-journo duo unravel this mystery, each in their own way.
Nimitta Matra is one of many films hitting OTT this week. For Kannada audiences, there’s Agnyathavasi, Vidyapati and My Hero, while HIT 3, Retro and Thudarum will have Kannada dubbed options.
