Nirbhaya - Somaajer Lokkhi Trailer Release: What happens when the law stands in the way of justice?

The trailer of Nirbhaya- Somaajer Lokkhi starring debutant Hiya Dey in the lead role, was released yesterday and it is garnering the attention of Bengali moviegoers for all the right reasons. Earlier, Sreelekha Mitra, who plays a pivotal role in the film, shared the poster on her Instagram and offered a glimpse into the plot.

The film depicts the struggle and trauma of a girl who was gang-raped and becomes pregnant. But, her real fight begins when she seeks the court’s permission for abortion. A prolonged legal battle ensues , draining her physically and mentally.

Anshuman Pratyush has developed the story, written the script and dialogues, and also directed the film. Earlier he has directed films like Paanther (2019), SOS Kolkata (2020), Baazi (2021). Prateek Kundu provided the background score of the film. Nirbhaya - Somaajer Lokkhi is a joint venture of Amrik Entertainment Space and Pratyush Productions.

What's Nirbhaya- Somaajer Lokkhi about?

A girl of 13 becomes pregnant as a result of being gang-raped. But she is neither physically nor mentally capable g of raising a child. She seeks an abortion, but in order to do so she needs permission from the court as she has passed the gestation period.

A protracted court battle ensues between two sides - one standing firm on her right to abortion while the opposition resorts to unethical means . The legal battle is very much reminiscent of Rituparno Ghosh’s Dahan (1997). Nirbhaya- Somaajer Lokkhi sheds light on the shame,embarrassment, and mental trauma that one is subjected to while seeking justice for such sensitive issues. .

Who will star in Nirbhaya- Somaajer Lokkhi ?

Nirbhaya- Somaajer Lokkhi has an ensemble cast with screen veterans, Sabsyachi Chatterjee as the judge and Santilal Mukherjee as the opposition lawyer. Alongside them, Gaurav Chakrabarty is playing the role of the defendant’s lawyer while Priyanka Sarkar joins hands with him later. Sreelekha Mitra will also be seen in a key role.

However, despite all these big names, it is Hiya Dey who is stealing the limelight. This child actor has caught the audience’s attention previously in TV serials like Patalkumar Ganwala, Alo Chhaya, and Felna. Expectedly, fans are very excited to witness her debut on the big screen as the protagonist.

Although Bengali moviegoers are rooting for a theatrical release, the makers have not yet revealed any details about its release date or platform. But, in all probability, it will premier before the end of this year.
