Duniya Vijay’s Salaga was supposed to be an Ugadi release back in 2020. In the time since, up until its theatrical release on October 14, never once did the actor-director or the producer KP Srikanth ever propose an OTT outing for it. In fact, despite the possibility of an earlier theatrical release, they held on till such time that 100% occupancy was allowed in movie halls in Karnataka. “This is my first directorial movie. I want people to watch it only in theatres. Hence, we won't come to OTT,” he had said back then.
Naturally, the latest rumours about an OTT release have been upsetting for Vijay, whose film has been doing fairly well at the box office. In a video statement released on social media, Vijay thanked fans for the phenomenal response to the film, and added, “There are some people out there who are trying to undermine the success of Salaga. Their hope is to cause us damage by spreading the rumour that the film will soon be on OTT, thereby ensuring that people don’t come to theatres. That is not true. This is a film that as made for the theatrical experience, which is why we waited for two years for the right opportunity to bring it to movie halls. We are not taking it to OTT and the film will remain in theatres. In fact, we did not accept any offer for digital rights back then and haven’t yet. My humble request to audiences is to not miss out on the opportunity to watch Salaga on the big screen, thinking that it will be on OTT soon.”
Vijay’s comment comes in the wake of reports suggesting that the digital rights of the film have been sold to SunNXT, with a likely streaming date sometime in December.
The film stars Duniya Vijay, Sanjana Anand and Dhananjaya in pivotal roles.
