KGF: Chapter 2 was supposed to release on OTT today, according to industry insiders, news agencies, etc. May 27 was the D-Day apparently. The film has been on the platform of its digital partner, Amazon Prime Video for over 10 days already, but on rental basis only. You can pay Rs 199 and access it for 48 hours. That’s the deal. Prime Video will, at some point, have to make it available to subscribers at no additional cost, but that day is not today. Queries to the platform about when KGF: Chapter 2 will be available elicited a standard response. Amazon Help wrote, “We understand your concern. We do not have an update currently. However, do stay tuned in to our website for further updates.”
Here's the thing, although the platform apparently bought KGF: Chapter 2 at an exorbitant rate, at no point was there a date announcement about when it would be made available, which, one would think, is the norm for a film of this stature. May 27 is not a date that was ever officially communicated, no one knows its origin. It was just put out there and spread like wildfire. However, Amazon Prime Video did not negate this piece of information either. Instead, it just went ahead and put the film out on its video-on-demand catalogue. This too, was done with no fanfare, and raised a lot of eyebrows, considering that subscribers already shell out Rs 1499 per year on subscription to the platform.
Right now, there’s no word on when KGF: Chapter 2 will actually be available for ‘free’. The film is still going strong in theatres in its sixth week. According to industry insiders, distributors have claimed that the OTT deal for the film was for 50-days from date of theatrical release, which, would put it at June 3rd at best. Initial reports had suggested that Hombale Films’ deal with Amazon Prime video was for 50-60 days.
In fact, in the last few days, when Hombale Films began releasing full videos of all the songs from the film, the theory that the OTT release was near gained credence. So, where is KGF: Chapter 2? Over to Amazon Prime Video.
