Universal Pictures debuted the first trailer of Jordan Peele's new horror feature Nope, starring Daniel Kaluuya, Steven Yeun and Keke Palmer. The film is Peele's third directorial after Get Out and Us.
The clip opens with Palmer narrating that the first prototype of a motion picture featured a Black man, her great great great (great?) grandfather riding a horse. She's on a film set with Kaluuya who seems completely unimpressed with this nugget of information.
Then the trailer shifts to Haywood Ranch, the only ones to have Black horse trainers in all of Hollywood. Palmer can be seen dancing around in her house with a drink in hand as the lights go off suddenly. Kaluuya whose tending to a horse outside spots a bright light blink and go, and the next thing you know the horse loses its cool and flees.
There's something in the sky, visible during the day and night, that mires the key characters and everyone else around them. From the large shadows looming over and following the characters, it seems like Nope's story will feature extra-terrestrial involvement.
We'll only know better once the film is out but it's expected that the plot will tackle socially conscious themes along with scaring the audience.
Variety writes that with Nope, Peele is collaborating with cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema who has been the director of photography on Christopher Nolan's projects like Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet and the upcoming Oppenheimer.
Nope hits US theatres on July 22.
