Nushrratt Bharuccha on star kids' advantage: 'They can knock on doors I may not even know the address of'

Nushrratt Bharuccha, whose credits include Pyaar Ka Punchnama and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, has now spoken up about the difficulties she has had in the business, despite her recent success. The actor opened up to Shubhankar Mishra about her struggles as an outsider in Bollywood, discussing how difficult it is to break into the industry and make your way around without any contacts.

Nushrratt Bharuccha on early beginnings and ongoing challenges

Bharuccha started her career with a lead role in Jai Santoshi Maa. She went on to have a string of commercial successes, although she still faced challenges acquiring roles. When asked about the seemingly more stable career paths of her contemporaries Sonakshi Sinha and Shraddha Kapoor, who made their debuts with Dabangg and Teen Patti, respectively, the actor didn't hesitate to bring up the issue of access.

She said that clearly, they're in a better position than her. "They know the industry; they know the people. And if they don’t, their parents do. So what happens is they reach places I cannot. They can knock on doors I may not even know the address of. If I want to meet a director, who’s going to give me his number? Where should I even ask for the director’s address? This is a very practical problem — but it’s a real one," she said.

Pain of getting noticed

Even after her breakout performance in Pyaar Ka Punchnama, the actor struggled to even contact filmmakers, as she revealed in a personal story. It was the highlight of her month when she messaged Kabir Khan about some work and he responded by agreeing to meet. Getting in touch with directors or scheduling meetings is a major pain. Those outside the industry have a really terrible time of it. 

Bharuccha dislikes referring to them as "nepo kids" because they face unique challenges; nonetheless, it is true that they do make progress that outsiders do not. She thinks being an outsider might be more challenging. Anyone interested in collaborating with her is valuable to her. When she thinks of them, she thinks of family. The actor would have preferred a higher volume of affirmative responses—more yeses than nos. Still, Bharuccha was pleased with the films she had.

The sequel to Bharuccha's horror smash Chhorii from 2021, Chhorii 2, is currently streaming on Prime Video. This film, which is Vishal Furia's directorial, features Gashmeer Mahajani, Hardika Sharma, and Soha Ali Khan, who made her acting comeback. The story follows Bharuccha's Sakshi as she fights evil supernatural forces for the sake of her daughter Ishaani, played by Badika.
