Aarakshan (2011)

Aarakshan, when released, opened to mixed reviews. It was a movie about caste-based reservations and what it feels like to be someone who is marginalised just because they are born into a certain segment of society. Ek Chalis Ki Last Local (2007)

A thriller that deserves to be watched and discussed more. Starring Abhay and Neha in the lead, the movie is about a night when two strangers miss their last train from Kurla station in Mumbai, and their lives get intertwined, creating a mess. Monsoon Shootout (2013)
Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Vijay Varma, and Neeraj Kabi.

The film that made it to Cannes is where Vijay Varma and Nawazuddin Siddiqui bloomed into actors with impeccable talent. Set in Mumbai when it is raining heavily, the story is about a cop who now has to make a decision whether he wants to kill someone or not because he is not sure whether he is the man he was assigned to bust. Set right when the grip of the underworld was loosening over the city, the film captures the cleansing of the city that was much spoken about back in the day.
My Brother…Nikhil (2005)
Cast: Juhi Chawla, Sanjay Suri, and Purab Kohli.
Director: Onir.
Onir made one of the most sensitive films back in the day, much ahead of its time. This is the film where Juhi Chawla gives the best performance of her career so far and touches our hearts with each emotion. My Brother….Nikhil is an experience better had than read about. Ishqiya (2010)
Cast: Vidya Balan, Arshad Warsi, and Naseeruddin Shah.
Director: Abhishek Chaubey.
What more can be written about Ishqiya that is not already said? The movie is the most unapologetic piece of art, with a woman in the centre being a femme fatale and also owning it like it was her only goal to be. Vidya Balan gives a stellar performance and so do Arshad Warsi and Naseeruddin Shah. Additionally, the film is laced with Gulzar Sahab’s poetry and Vishal Bhardwaj’s music. What more do you even want?
