After what feels like forever, we are finally in a time where all kinds of films have takers and a spot in the mainstream. The audience is now asking for movies that are far away from run-of-the-mill content and much more nuanced than many that have been working so far. Even in the OTT space, which initially was made for offbeat content, for a brief while became a space that became home to the commercial pool. But we are now back in the game, and there are good films hitting the shore. Lionsgate Play is one such streamer where some offbeat movies have found a home, and they sit there in a niche corner that is not well explored. Surprised? Well, even we were when we discovered these films on the streaming platform.

Over the past year, Lionsgate Play has become home to some of the most popular English language shows and films, and that has given it the image that it holds most of the foreign language content. But if you scratch the surface, there is so much Hindi content that you will be surprised. So, as we explored the side of the streamer, we discovered some unconventional gems of movies that were celebrated on release and now have a den on the streaming platform. Over time, these movies have amassed a cult following, and that makes them the most interesting to watch.

Let us take a look at 5 such films that are a must-watch if you haven't and can also be rewatched just for revision. Discover them on Lionsgate Play and get on board with us on this journey.

Offbeat Movies to Watch on the Lionsgate Play App

Aarakshan (2011)

Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Saif Ali Khan, Manoj Bajpayee, and Prateik Babbar.
Director: Prakash Jha.

Aarakshan, when released, opened to mixed reviews. It was a movie about caste-based reservations and what it feels like to be someone who is marginalised just because they are born into a certain segment of society. But over the years, the film has found a fandom on satellite television and on streaming too. Watch the film on Lionsgate Play for some very interesting performances and a beautiful music album.

Ek Chalis Ki Last Local (2007)

Cast: Abhay Deol and Neha Dhupia.
Director: Sanjay Khanduri.

A thriller that deserves to be watched and discussed more. Starring Abhay and Neha in the lead, the movie is about a night when two strangers miss their last train from Kurla station in Mumbai, and their lives get intertwined, creating a mess. The movie was called much ahead of its time and probably now is the time. Check it out on Lionsgate Play and let us know how you feel about it.

Monsoon Shootout (2013)

Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Vijay Varma, and Neeraj Kabi.
Director: Amit Kumar.

The film that made it to Cannes is where Vijay Varma and Nawazuddin Siddiqui bloomed into actors with impeccable talent. Set in Mumbai when it is raining heavily, the story is about a cop who now has to make a decision whether he wants to kill someone or not because he is not sure whether he is the man he was assigned to bust. Set right when the grip of the underworld was loosening over the city, the film captures the cleansing of the city that was much spoken about back in the day.

My Brother…Nikhil (2005)

Cast: Juhi Chawla, Sanjay Suri, and Purab Kohli.
Director: Onir.

Onir made one of the most sensitive films back in the day, much ahead of its time. This is the film where Juhi Chawla gives the best performance of her career so far and touches our hearts with each emotion. My Brother….Nikhil is an experience better had than read about. The film deserves to be seen more. Catch it on Lionsgate Play the soonest.

Ishqiya (2010)

Cast: Vidya Balan, Arshad Warsi, and Naseeruddin Shah.
Director: Abhishek Chaubey.

What more can be written about Ishqiya that is not already said? The movie is the most unapologetic piece of art, with a woman in the centre being a femme fatale and also owning it like it was her only goal to be. Vidya Balan gives a stellar performance and so do Arshad Warsi and Naseeruddin Shah. Additionally, the film is laced with Gulzar Sahab’s poetry and Vishal Bhardwaj’s music. What more do you even want?
