Despite getting positive reviews, Kunchacko Boban and Priya Mani’s latest Malayalam thriller, Officer On Duty, got off to a lukewarm start at the Kerala box office, with the movie raking in only Rs 1.29 Cr on its opening day, according to industry trackers Sacnilk.
The Jithu Ashraf directorial, however, is expected to gain momentum in the coming days, with only Unni Mukundan’s Get-Set Baby being the only other formidable competition for it. On its opening day itself, due to the response, about 35 extra screens and 60 shows were added, according to the makers.
Having released on a working day, the movie, which is scripted by Nayattu and Joseph writer Shahi Kabir, still got off to a decent start – and the numbers are expected to climb during Friday and the following weekend.

The movie has Kunchacko essaying the role of a demoted police officer, whose investigation into a fake gold chain racket, unearths a plot revolving teenage girls, drug peddlers and a slew of revenge murders – with the protagonist battling his own trauma al th while. The makers are yet to reveal the opening day worldwide gross for the film, which also has Unni Lalu, Jagadish, Vishak Nair and Manoj KU.
Industry experts are already predicting Officer On Duty to become the second hit in Malayalam cinema in 2025, after Asif Ali’s Rekhachithram that is set to begin streaming on SonyLIV from March 7. Given that there aren’t any big releases coming up for the next few weeks, due to the annual examinations, the Kunchacko-starrer is expected to have an extended run at the box office.
The film’s OTT rights have been snapped up by Netflix , which could drop the movie on the platform by March 20, 2025.
