O.J. Simpson, aka Orenthal James Simpson, took his last breath at the age of 76 on April 10, 2024, at his home, in Las Vegas. The shocking news was announced by his family today on Twitter. The post reads “On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace.”

Last year in May, Simpson himself announced that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He wrote on Twitter, “I had to do the whole chemo thing…I started smoking a couple of puffs a day, and I only had nausea twice. I’m over the chemo. I only got nauseous on two occasions.…The pot really helped me with the unfortunate side of catching cancer.” Orenthal was an American football player, actor, and broadcaster. He played in the National Football League (NFL) for 11 seasons, primarily with the Buffalo Bills, and is regarded as one of the greatest running backs of all time.

However, despite being a star player, his fame was overshadowed by a controversial lawsuit for the double-murder case of his former wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman in 1994 in California. Both the victims were stabbed to death, outside Brown’s house. Back then, the US media named the case ‘The trial of the century’. He was found guilty for the murders, and had served 9 years of jail in Nevada prison. The lawsuit made his career go from football icon to the most controversial celebrity in the world.

Simpson retired from football in 1979. He has also worked as an actor in films like The Towering Inferno (1974), Capricorn One (1977) and the The Naked Gun (1988-1994) film series. He was last seen in The Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson in 2017.

Simpson won the Heisman Trophy for the University of Southern California (USC) in 1968. The honour is given to the best football player in college. After shining his university name, he entered the National Football League (NFL), with the Buffalo Bills making him their number-1 pick. He earned the Most Valuable Player (MVP) honour in 1973. Later, Simpson secured his place in football history with a 1985 induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
