With nearly Rs. 38 crore nett in its first weekend, OMG 2 is off to a promising start. Even though Akshay Kumar has a very minor role, the public has responded positively to the film because of his name recognition and the franchise potential that comes with it.
The picture is targeted mostly for larger markets, so Sunday's 20% increase is encouraging news for its future box office performance. The film faces stiff competition from Gadar 2: The Katha Continues, which has not only smashed records at the box office but also received acclaim from critics and audiences alike. So, given the odds, the fact that the film succeeds despite them is a plus.
OMG 2 has been doing well at the box office in most markets, although the larger urban areas have been the most important contributors.
On its opening day, the film starring Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam minted Rs. 10.26 crore. The first Saturday showed a huge jump with a collection of Rs. 15.30 crore. While Sunday witnessed a further slight jump of Rs. 17.55 crore. The total collections in the first weekend were Rs. 43.11 crore, as per production figures.
Not only does OMG 2 have to compete with Gadar 2, but also Rajnikanth's Jailer, which also came out on the same Friday. Despite these setbacks, the film has maintained a solid box office performance. Reviews for the film have been mostly positive due to its important message on sex education.
Amit Rai is the director of OMG 2, which stars Akshay as Lord Shiva's messenger. However, the actor is seen donning the look of God towards the climax of the film. The producers of the film are Vipul D. Shah, Rajesh Behl, Ashwin Varde, Aruna Bhatia, Ajit Andhare, and Swaroop Sampat, among others.
