One of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's most adored Bollywood masterpieces, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam is 23 years old today. The film, which had Ajay Devgn, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Salman Khan in the lead, is a cult classic based on Rashtriyashayar Jhaverchand Meghani's play Shetal ne Kathe. The film narrates the story of a newlywed man who discovers that his wife is in love with another man, and decides to unite them. Here, Vanraj, played by Ajay Devgn, discovers that his partner, Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), so in love with Sameer (Salman Khan), so he takes her to Italy to meet him.

The film won several awards and accolades, most notable among them being the National Awards for music, choreography, cinematography and Production Design. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was well received by most critics — especially for its emotional content, cinematography and music — as well as the performances of the lead actors and a surprising performance by guest star Helen.
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam has some classic hit songs like Dholi Taro Dhol Baaje, which was a chartbuster and became one of the top songs to be performed at weddings or parties. Another hit from the film’s music album was Nimbooda, beautifully performed by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan that still earns praises. Tadap Tadap, one of iconic playback singer KK’s iconic songs was, interestingly, also his debut song in Bollywood.
Written, directed and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam witnessed a theatrical release on 18th June, 1999, and went on to earn critical acclaim and was a box office success! This romantic saga has filled the audiences with every beat of entertainment and still continues to do so. The film shall remain a classic over the years to come.
