The first teaser of Operation Java filmmaker Tharun Moorthy’s Saudi Vellakka was released recently by Mohanlal. The movie, which is touted to be a family drama, has Lukman Avaran and Binu Pappu in the lead.

The video showed glimpses of a courtroom proceedings at a magistrate court in Mattanchery where the case was about a coconut drupe – with the lawyers informing the judge what a ‘vellakka’ was called in their native places and the magistrate asking a petitioner if it’s best to pay a fine of Rs 200 or shell out Rs 20000 to defend his case. We also get to see glimpses of characters played by Lukman, Binu and Sujith Shankar in the teaser, which also revealed that the movie will hit theatres on May 20.

In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Tharun had said that the family drama is set in a coastal area in Kochi, and just like his debut film, Operation Java, it has a plethora of characters. Debutante Devi Varma plays the female protagonist in the film, which also has Srinda and Dhanya Ananya as part of the supporting cast.

The filmmaker also said that Saudi Vellakka, which is based on a true story, is also a satire that has humour, romance and messages of social commitment. The movie, which is produced by Sandip Senan, was greenlit even before Operation Java had hit theatres last year when cinema halls in Kerala reopened for the first time after the pandemic.

Meanwhile, May is already proving to be a crowded week in Malayalam. As of now, Krishna Shankar’s Trojan and Siju Wilson’s Varayan will also hit theatres along with Saudi Vellakka on May 20. On the week prior to this, several big ticket films will be releasing including Soubin Shahir’s drama Djinn, Mathew Thomas and Nikhila Vimal’s coming-of-age comedy Jo and Jo, Jayasurya and Manju Warrier’s feel-good drama Meri Awas Suno and Suraj Venjaramoodu and Indrajith Sukumaran’s thriller Pathaam Valavu.
