Christopher Nolan’s highly awaited Oppenheimer promises to be an earnest retelling of a notable chapter in world history. The biographical film revolves around the story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, known as the ‘father of the atomic bomb’, who played a significant role in the World War II’s the Manhattan Project, which led to the development of the first nuclear weapons. The makers recently unveiled the first trailer of the upcoming film, which sees Cillian Murphy in the titular role.

The visually striking trailer takes viewers through the scientist’s dilemmas and uncertainties regarding the undertaking. His anxieties are exhibited when he talks about how his ideas for the future are ‘horrifying’ and how imperative it is for people to actually fear it. But for the purpose of fearing it, they must be able to understand it, and the only way for that is for them to use it. At one point he is even heard saying “I do not know if we can be trusted with such a weapon, but we have no choice”.

The film features an ensemble cast comprising of Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, Robert Downey Jr., Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, David Krumholtz, Michael Angarano, and Matthias Schweighöfer.

Nolan has written and directed the film, and also produced it along with Emma Thomas and Charles Roven.

Oppenheimer will be released in theatres on July 21, 2023.
