Mammootty's 1989 iconic film Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha is gearing up to return to the cinema halls in Kerala on February 7, 2025. Ahead of its much-talked-about re-release, the leading man Mammootty sat down for a chat with Ramesh Pisharody about the film, which has earned a classic tag over the years. While sharing interesting tidbits about the film, Mammootty also recounted how he got injured during the shoot of an action sequence. Read on to know what the Malayalam megastar has to say about the cult-classic film, which is directed by Hariharan and based on the legendary MT Vasudevan Nair's script.
Mammootty played the role of Chandu Chekavar in the film, which is based on folklore and narrates the story of traditional warriors from northern Kerala. The film also had several action sequences centred around the martial arts of Kalaripayattu. The actors used weapons made of real metal that were quite heavy during the action sequences, the megastar recounted during his recent chat with Ramesh Pisharody. Mammootty further narrated that for a particular sequence, he got injured while trying to catch a sword.
“I had to jump and catch a sword, but I missed, and it pierced my thigh. It cut deep, and the pain was intense," he said.
But despite suffering the injury, Mammootty continued with the shoot as the wound was not visible on camera. “I still carry the scar,” he remarked.

Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, headlined by Mammootty, had several other notables in its star cast including Balan K. Nair, Suresh Gopi, Madhavi, Geetha, and Captain Raju. Hariharan's film earned both critical acclaim and the audience’s love. The Malayalam movie went on to win several accolades at the National Film Awards, including Best Actor for Mammootty and Best Screenplay for MT.
The 1989 film will be released in theatres in Kerala in a digitally remastered 4K Atmos version on Friday, giving a chance for the younger audiences to watch the iconic film in cinema halls in all its glory.
Several yesteryear Malayalam films were re-released in theatres in 2024. Mammootty's Valliettan, Mohanlal-starrers Devadoothan and Manichitrathazhu were among the major re-releases from Malayalam last year.
