Oscar night is supposed to be a time when the world is supposed to be talking about cinema and deserved winners. But the spotlight quickly shifted to Will Smith for more than one reason.

The actor, who won the Best Actor award at the 94th Academy Awards, was involved in an altercation with actor and comedian Chris Rock. Rock made a joke at the expense of Smith’s Wife Jada Pinkett Smith, which did not sit well with the King Richard actor.

Smith walked on stage and threw a right hook at Chris Rock, which shocked everyone at the Dolby Theatre and at home. The actor was also heard asking Chris Rock rather aggressively to keep his wife’s name out of his mouth.

The event caught the attention of everyone and even some celebrity names are speaking about the moment. Late-night host Conan O’Brien wrote, “Just saw the Will Smith slap. Anyone have a late night show I can borrow just for tomorrow?”

Director Judd Apatow publicly spoke about the altercation, saying that it was pure out of control rage and violence. Sophia Bush also condemned Smith’s actions, pointing out the violence is his actions, however added that punching down at someone’s auto-immune system is wrong.

Daily Show host Trevor Noah wrote, “Wtaf????? That wasn’t scripted?????”, while comedian Billy Eichner joked, ““I’m getting under my couch,”.

Jada Pinkett Smith has been publicly fighting alopecia, an autoimmune disorder, which causes hair loss by attacking hair follicles.

Will Smith went on to win the Best Actor award for his performance in King Richard, later at the event.
