Oscar 2024 shortlist out - Tovino Thomas' 2018 misses out for Best International Feature, here are the films that made the cut

The prestigious Academy Awards, also popular as the Oscars have unveiled its coveted list of nominations, and many anticipated films, which were eyeing for their participation have finally made the list. On Thursday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed multiple shortlists in various categories, including the animated short film, sound and visual effects, documentary feature film, original music score, international feature film, and documentary short film in the categorical nominations.

The 96th Academy Awards declared the 10 categories shortlists with Killers of the Flower Moon, Barbie, and Oppenheimer making the grand entry in multiple categories.

Best International feature

As we wrapped 2023 with some of the biggest blockbusters like Barbie and Oppenheimer releasing in the year, it is now time to celebrate their success with the highly anticipated nominations. December 21 marked the epic films one step closer to their Oscar wins by getting their nominations before the official voting begins. However, it also means that the nominations certainly shattered the dreams of those who were anxiously waiting to see their names on the list.

One of them is India’s official entry to the Academy Awards in the form of the 2023 Malayalam-language drama film, called 2018. Inspired by the disastrous floods that occurred in Kerala in 2018 – This ‘2018’ survival film was directed and written by Jude Anthany Joseph.

Actor Tovino Thomas led the ensemble cast with Asif Ali, Kunchacko Boban, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Lal, and Narain in pivotal roles. 2018 was critically acclaimed for depicting the aftermaths of a natural disaster and in September, the Film Federation of India decided to officially send it to the Oscar nominations in the Best International Feature category.

Amongst the films that knocked out 2018 and other films to gain nominations in the Best International Feature category, include Japan’s ‘Perfect Days’ and Spain’s ‘Society of the Snow.’
