While there are a lot of things happening across the globe, some serious and more important than others, last evening turned out to be an attention-grabbing one as The Academy announced the nominations for the Oscars 2025. The event, scheduled for March 2025, is one of the most prestigious for world cinema, where art is honored, and great films are celebrated by the fraternity and the world through the telecast. Yesterday, Bowen Yang, Rachel Sennott, Sian Heder, and Eric Roth took center stage at the Academy's prestigious Samuel Goldwyn Theater and announced the nominations for the year 2025. While Emilia Pérez and a few others have managed to create history, the internet is clearly not happy with some of the most notable snubs that have taken place in the nominations list.

While Anuja from India made the cut, the rest were out of the race. However, the list is wild and surprising, as Emilia Pérez bagged 13 nominations, creating history. Karla Sofía Gascón also became the first transgender woman nominated for an acting Oscar for the same film. However, as netizens noted, some were snubbed. Fans are unhappy that the Academy did not acknowledge Denis Villeneuve’s masterclass work in Dune: Part Two.

Here are five actors, filmmakers, and films that the netizens think were snubbed from the Oscars nominations 2025, which has left them with a bitter aftertaste. Read on and let us know what you think about this.

Denis Villeneuve – Best Director

The fact that Denis Villeneuve managed to make a second Dune movie after the monstrously massive response to the first film, without the pressure of following the same formula, deserves an award. Dune Part Two turned out to be a classic film that embraced the oddities this story rides on, and there is so much to hook onto in this film and its universe. Almost every review of the film heaped praises on the filmmaker. However, the Oscar panel did not consider him worthy of the Best Director category for 2025.

Angelina Jolie – Best Actress

If there is an acting performance of Angelina Jolie that has managed to overshadow the constant buzz around her personal life, and people are only talking about how good she is in the film, then there is definitely a great performance out there. In Maria, Jolie played Maria Callas, and under Pablo Larrain’s vision, she brought out the complex character so well for the audience. Her performance in the psychological drama was being touted for an Oscar nomination, but alas!

All We Imagine As Light – Best International Feature

Payal Kapadia made history for India when she took her directorial All We Imagine As Light to the Cannes Film Festival as the first film in 30 years from the country. Not only that, but it also won The Grand Prix there, an unforgettable visual for all cinephiles. Starring Chhaya Kadam, Kani Kusruti, and Divya Prabha, the movie is about Mumbai and the life of immigrants in this city, especially women. The fact that India failed to send the movie as their official entry and then the Oscars snubbed its independent application has left fans furious.

Challengers – Best Original Score

Of course, Challengers is on this list. With Zendaya, Josh O'Connor, and Mike Faist at the center of it all, Luca Guadagnino's directorial left the internet divided when it was released. Its boldness and wilderness churned out extreme reactions, but everyone agrees that it has one of the best original scores in a decade. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won the Best Original Score at this year’s Golden Globes, and it was expected that they would also be nominated for the Oscars. But they weren't.

Daniel Craig – Best Actor

Not that Daniel Craig needs to prove that he is a great actor, but who doesn't like some validation? Even with a resume as shiny as his, the James Bond star has yet to secure a single Oscar nomination, and that is quite surprising. Everyone thought he would be nominated for Luca Guadagnino's Queer, where Craig portrays a lonely gay American expat in New Mexico who develops a crush on a much younger man. But The Academy again felt he wasn’t potent enough to be on the list. However, his performance in Queer is considered one of his most lauded ones in his career.

The Oscars will take place on March 2, 2025, and will be telecast in India on Disney+ Hotstar. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
