Even as cinema halls open to 50% capacity, the content that will keep us hooked is still spread across OTT platforms. Here’s what you can choose from this week.

Bro Daddy

Bro Daddy is a Malayalam language film streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. It brings together two of the biggest stars of Malayalam cinema - Prithviraj Sukumaran, who has directed this, and Mohanlal, of course. It is a well-made family drama with a terrific ensemble cast. Mohanlal plays Prithviraj’s father. Apart from them, Kalyani Priyadarshan, Meena, Kaniha, and Lalu Alex play prominent roles. The plot revolves around the families of John Kattadi and Kurien, played by Mohanlal and Lalu Alex, respectively. Two accidental “events” cause major twists in the plot. Funny and charming in bits, it’s a one-time watch.

The Afterparty

Three episodes are out, and a new one every subsequent week on Apple TV+. The Afterparty is an eight-episode murder mystery comedy series helmed by Chris Miller (one half of the duo responsible for films like 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie) as its creator and director. The show follows a group of high school alumni who reunite for a lavish afterparty only to find themselves as suspects in a murder mystery. It has all the attributes of a classic whodunnit, with comic overtones. Solving the murder is Danner (Tiffany Haddish), who is in a particular rush to solve the case and begins to interview possible eyewitnesses and suspects one by one. "We are all stars in our movie—the same thing could happen, but you see it differently," she says. Every episode is a genre in itself, as everyone has a different recollection of how things played out. Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, Zié Chao, Ilana Glaser, Ike Barinholtz, and Ben Schwartz charm us with some great performances, and this level of genre experimentation comes off as a pretty engaging whodunnit!

Badava Rascal

Badava Rascal is now streaming on Voot Select. It stars Dhananjay and explores the struggles of a youngster from a middle-class background. Directed by Shankar Guru, it also stars Amrutha Iyengar, Rangayana Raghu, Tara, and Nagabhushana and talks about what happens when the son of an auto driver falls in love with a politician's daughter. This relatable middle-class family drama, with its humour, music, and performances, is sure to entertain.

Titane

Julia Ducournau’s Titane is a Cannes Award-winning body horror film. Starring Agathe Rousselle as a serial killer on the run, it isn't anything like what you have seen before. Supremely disturbing, wacky, even bizarre, Titane isn't for the faint-hearted. It follows a woman who, after having a serious injury, has a titanium plate fitted on her head. What follows is her journey, involving a weird fetish for cars. The scenes are wild and shocking, but they are also powerfully original and arresting. A woman has sex with a car and gets pregnant! Yes, that’s the premise, and if this is something you find irresistible, watch it on MUBI.

Kapil Sharma: I'm Not Done Yet

What’s Kapil Sharma doing on Netflix? Well, as he himself explains, he isn’t done yet. Speaking to a room full of his friends, colleagues from the fraternity and family, Kapil talks about his incredible journey from a confused young man from Amritsar to being the host of one of the most well-known celebrity chat shows. Some of the incidents in his life we already know, but Kapil gives them his trademark spin and opens up about his struggle. The most special bits, however, are the ones where he isn’t trying to be funny at all as he speaks about his father and their shared bond.
